Coloring Easter... Chickens?

Imagine that you're walking through an open air market, looking at the goods for sale, when you hear the incessant peeping and chirping of baby chickens. Drawn by memories of seeing the cute little yellow fuzzy birds racing about, you walk over to where the birds are kept. Looking into the box, your delight turns to concern when you notice the chicks aren't yellow, as expected - they're green. Blue. Red. Purple. Orange.

According to Minnesota law, it is illegal to dye live poultry. It can't be any simpler than that. But unfortunately, year after year (around Easter time, in fact), people continue to do so. How do they do it? It's rather simple:

  1. Fill up a vat of dye.
  2. Acquire a bunch of live chicks.
  3. Dump the chicks in for a variable amount of time.
  4. The chicks that don't drown, are placed in a cardboard box to dry off.
  5. The chicks that don't die as a result of the dye are placed in another box.
  6. Sell the chicks to unsuspecting parents who want to give their kids an "Easter Pet".

The chicks that do survive the whole process and are purchased by parents, do tend to live normal lives. That means they grow up. You know - change from "chicks" to "chickens" and start doing "chicken things" like flying around, making a mess, and being loud and obnoxious. In other words, being a chicken.

Simply put, selling dyed chicks is illegal, inhumane, and irresponsible. Do yourself the favor and if you want an Easter Pet, go buy a chocolate bunny. If you see dyed chicks for sale, inform a local law official. It's really the best for everyone.
