Byya and Charlie

The Challenge | The Trainers and Students | Event Information

Saturday, August 2

Byya is doing well. She continues to improve in her riding basics. I’ve been working on getting her handy opening gates and such. I even opened the large garage door in our arena from her back one day. No problem for her.

I had her pulling a small sled around the the arena the other day and I’ve started working on being able to throw a rope from her back.

I started riding with the bit earlier in July. She isn’t thrilled about taking the bit but once it’s in she has no problems with it.

I’ve been doing a lot of road riding to expose her to things out there in the world. She does really well considering we are on a very busy road. And I mean busy both with traffic and with people doing things in their yards. Frisbees, sprinklers, dogs, tractors, motorcycles, bicycles. She has seen a lot and handles it pretty darn well. I think I'll try to take her to a park this weekend for a longer trail ride.

Just wanted to give a quick update on Byya. She is doing great. She has really settled in with her new foster family. She got a little bothered the other day when we took two of our other horses out for a trail ride. She didn't want her new buddies to go anywhere without her. I'm noticing that she has become more vocal when I show up (lots of nickers) and much more willing to push her way into a pile of hay. She has definitely settled in.

I put the 4th ride on her last night. It was the first time outside of the arena so I guess you could say it was her first "trail ride". We went all over the yard, out the driveway to the road, squeezed through tight spots between buildings and trees etc... She was great. I've been real pleased with her progress and feel privileged to have such a quick student. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to work with her.

About Byya: Foaled in 2005, Byya (pronounced "Bye-yah") is an Egyption Arabian mare with a super-sweet disposition. She is extremely level headed and does not spook when introduced to new things. She tends to be low on the pecking order, but also isn't afraid to express her opinion. She stands a petite 14.1 hands.

To get in touch with Charlie regarding Byya, or to set up a time where you can meet them both, please feel free to send him an e-mail.

About Charlie: I did not grow up with horses. I credit my wife for my "conversion" to horses. I bought my first horse in 1993. After a few years of riding and thinking I knew something, my horse eventually convinced me that I knew squat! So I commenced on a journey of studying the horse and working with as many good trainers/clinicians as I possibly could. I think this journey will be life long since every day the horses teach me more and points out where I'm lacking. But some days the horse tells me "nicely done". Those are good days indeed.
