Luna and Brian Heacock

The Challenge | The Trainers and Students | Event Information

Tuesday, August 18

We have a couple of picture of Luna at Wal-Mart strolling through the parking lot. Luna got a lot of attention, with a few people caming over with cameras asking to get her picture. Luna received some complements on how pretty she was. Then I rode her over to Home Depot to trailer back home.

Over the last couple of weeks, I have been side passing Luna, she is doing well. She will now back out of a horse trailer, whereas before she would not back out. She always wanted to turn around to come out. Luna has been on several trail rides, without other horses and with other horses. She has done very well, she is not showing any refusal to go where I ask her. She is not spooky.

She will lead, or follow another without becoming upset. My goal with Luna was to create a good safe trail horse. I have not given Luna any fancy riding skill, but I do believe Luna can go in several directions. Luna has never offered to buck, rear, or tried to run off.

Very easy to catch in the pasture, she usually come to me. Luna is pastured with two other mares, and two geldings. Luna is the lowest on the pecking order, she is fine with that. Never has offers to move up the chain.

Luna is willing to jump without getting excited. Luna takes things in stride, without getting crabby, or excited. I rode Luna into the Rum River July 20 , without refusal, deep enough for my stirrups and feet to get wet.

Luna is a wonderful horse to work with. She accepts new things very well. Presently, Luna is being trained for a safe trail riding horse,. She's willing to travel at a calm, non-refusal to go where asked. She looks at her rider as a leader, and partner. Luna is doing very good with her progress.

She has been mostly without any other horses. So she does not get her confident's from other horse, she get it from her human partner. Luna has been on several trail rides, large hills, creeks, traffic, school, and been to Wal-Mart in Elk River to visit with the customers. She has been trailered to the Sand Dunes State Forest in Zimmerman for the trail experience, and with no other horses. She loads and trailers very well.

Luna has carried a large American flag without incident; she would be a pretty parade horse. Luna has had several different riders, most have been novice riders, including our 14 year old grandson, a very novice rider. Luna has accepted different riders very comfortably. Luna has never offered to buck, rear, and does not get hot, excited.

Anyone is more than welcome to come to our home to visit Luna, and watch her in her progress. Contact Brian, or Char to set a time, 763-441-8548 or 612-850-6732.

Ready for a Parade, but no Parade. Luna accepts new objects with confidence.
Luna willing to go where asked. Ready for a Parade with puddles.

I have had Luna here now for nearly a month, so I guess it's time I write a note on her progress! She has been relatively easy to work with, the first week went great; mostly groundwork. Also I kept her separate from my horses, but she then jumped the fence and got in with my horses! There was a few minor squabbles, but all was good shortly. (Luna got a few days off because she had some swelling in her front legs from bumping the pipe fence when she jumped over it.) She does not try to push any of the other horses, however, she has become a little buddy sour, but I don't mind. Usually the more problems that you overcome with a horse the better the relationship becomes. When I start a horse I always ride alone the first few rides. I don't want the horse to become accustomed to riding in a group. I want the horse to look to me for comfort and security not the horse he is following. Luna was a bit more reluctant to leave the barn and go down the driveway after becoming good buddies with my hors,e but it's getting better and once we get across the road - she moves out pretty good.

To get in touch with Brian Heacock regarding Luna, or to set up a time where you can meet them both, please feel free to contact Brian via e-mail or at 763-441-8548 or 612-850-6732.

About Brian Heacock: I’m 51 and have mostly been self-employed since the last big recession owning a Tree Service. My wife Char bought our first horse in 1994, which soon turned into several that we bought which lead us to a big desire to learn more and more about training and understanding horse physiology. What I like best is colt starting and helping other people through their horse problems. One thing that I know for sure is that working with horses has made me a better person.
